Out of Bounds isn't a film about sports. It is a film about the culture of winning. During one hot morning in Texas a bunch of students share the same playing fields. A high school PE soccer team scrimmages on the back field, the drama club rehearses on the side field, the college track team runs laps around the track, and the fifth grade football players practice right in the middle of it all. Sometimes the drive to win comes from within, and sometimes it comes from a coach, parent or teammate, but in all four cases the need to win takes all the fun out of the game. While there is plenty of action, this is not an ordinary sports flick. Ten-year olds clash helmets to a spaghetti western soundtrack and high schoolers break out in song. Does pressure ruin the game for everyone, or are there ways for individuals to shine even without being winners?

"Out of Bounds" was created as part of "Six in Austin", a collaborative feature project in which six Austin directors each made one part of the whole film. The project is loosely based on the French new wave film "Six in Paris", except instead of using 16mm to create the films (the new technology for the French new wave filmmakers), we used the emerging lo-fi format of our day, mini-DV.

The six directors included in the project are Kat Candler (Cicadas), Gonzo Gonzalez (Cinemaker Co-Op), Geoff Marslett (Monkey vs. Robot), The Phillips Brothers (Someplace New), Bob Ray (Rock Opera), and the Zellner Brothers (Plastic Utopia, Frontier). "Six in Austin" was executive produced by Anne Del Castillo and Tamara Klindt. Each filmmaker has their own unique style, often very different from one another. The final product should be interesting and entertaining. Check out the Six in Austin webpage for more information.

We received good press here in Austin. Marc Savlov describes Six in Austin as "brilliant" and "funny" in the Austin Chronicle, and says it is "one of the best micro-budget DV pictures thus far."
